Updated February 9th, 2016: TurboTax’s You Party is back for 2016 and it’s a great excuse to invite some friends over, talk about the products you like, get motivated to start your tax return early, all over a beer, margarita, or two 😉 . TurboTax provides team hosts a kit with lanyards, balloons, tax checklists, a poster, and a few party props. Companies love to promote these type of events because they doesn’t cost them too much to run and it helps spread the word about their product or services. And of course you benefit – If you’re one of the 3000 people selected to participate in the event, 5 of your guests will get a software offer code to save 50% off on Deluxe, Premier or Home & Business versions if you end up filing with TurboTax Online this year. For you, you’ll get to file your personal tax return with any one of the Online versions, free!
How to apply.
You can begin the application process at TurboTax’s You Party page, which takes to over to houseparty.com site to complete the sign up process. If you’re not yet a member of House Party, then you’ll have to set aside a few minutes to open a new account (it’s free). Then once you confirm your account, you’ll be able to apply to be considered as a host.
The questions are pretty extensive so be prepared to spend around 10 minutes or so filling out the questioner. Some of the questions include your experience using TurboTax, the equipment that you have access at home to present to your guests, the social media services that you us, your ethnic background including the number of kids in your household, and your family’s income level. The folks at Intuit will look at your answers and use that in making their selections.
You’ll also have to agree that you’ll be able to host the house party within a certain time frame, be able to invite at least 10 guest to the event, upload photos and/or videos of the event to the You Party page (which you agree TurboTax has the rights and permission to use in any advertising), and complete an online survey before and after the event. If you decline any of these, then it’s unlikely you’ll get selected as host.
What happens when you’re chosen.
If you’re chosen as a Team Host, then you’ll get a fancy box in the mail with a bunch of party goodies and marketing material (it’ll look something like the box below). It includes 10 gift cards with a 50% off service code for Turbo Tax for each guest, branded folders to help everyone organize and store your tax information, party props and some balloons for taking your funny pictures, lanyards with the discount cards, and a big TurboTax poster to hang on your wall during the event.
If you’re chosen later in the tax season as a Squad Host (the only option if you apply after Tuesday, January 12), then you won’t get TurboTax’s physical package. Rather, everything you need online that you’ll have to download and print at home. That’s not as fun as getting the branding stuff in the mail, but the minimum guest requirement drops down to five. The software also isn’t offered for the Squad Host but you’ll get the save 50% off service code just like your guests do.
Then all that’s left to do is invite your friends, host your party, and get finished with your 2015 tax return.
Where do I enter my discount code at checkout?
Unlike the desktop versions of TurboTax where you buy the software and then fill out/send your tax return, it’s backwards with TurboTax Online. That is, you first prepare your tax return and then you pay for it. The discount service code you received at your TurboTax You Party is entered in the “I have a service code” on the “File Review Your Order” screen when you click “Pay & File”, after clicking “finished and ready to review”. Once entered, select “OK”, and you’ll see the discount applied to your calculated fees.
If you have questions or need assistance, like not seeing the discount being applied, then you can bypass the general contact page on the TurboTax site and just email them directly at firstname.lastname@example.org. We also welcome your comments, questions, and feedback down below.
