Updated December 29th, 2015: With tax season officially started, most of the best offers and discounts are now here (you’ll always find the best deals at the very start of the tax season). And one of these places that you can find a pretty good deal is at Walmart. But that’s if you need the desktop/cd versions as they don’t carry the download versions at the moment. If you need just the Federal version of Deluxe then it’s listed on sale for just $44.97. And if you need the Federal and State edition it’s just a few bucks more at $49.97. That’s roughly about 20% cheaper than the list price. No coupons are required but free shipping, when ordered online, starts at $50.00 so you’ll need to add a small item to your order to take advantage of it. Prices are subject to change so just keep that in mind as well.
Your other options
There are a number of places where you can pick up a good deal on TurboTax this year. We’ve put together an entire page with the latest offers so be sure to check that out to see what’s available. That includes special savings when ordering directly from the TurboTax store as well as partnership deals offered by some of the larger banks and financial institutions. You can also try out each of the versions online for free to get a feel for it if you haven’t used TurboTax before to complete your tax return. And finally before you go, we encourage you to sign up to our release date notifier list and we’ll inform you as soon as the new 2017 versions are released for the 2016 tax year.
The online versions
All of TurboTax’s resellers, like Walmart, Costco, etc., sell the traditional boxed versions of software. That means that you install the disk on your home computer and complete your return from that single machine. But did you know that TurboTax also offers online versions of Deluxe, Premier and Home & Business? That’s right, with the trend going towards software in the cloud, you can complete your entire tax return with TurboTax online.
There are plusses and minuses of both the online and desktop versions of TurboTax. The online version lets you work on your return from any computer or tablet and save as you go. So for example you can start your taxes from your couch on your tablet, pick up where you stopped off at your desktop computer at work, and then finish off from your laptop at home. The downside is that you need to have an internet connection to work on your return which is not required with the desktop version. But then again the desktop version only lets you work on your taxes from that single computer.
Did you find a better deal at Walmart that’s not listed on this page? Then let us know in the comments below and we’ll update the deals so others can also get a great deal.
