Updated on Monday March 16th, 2020: So you bought a copy a TurboTax at your favorite store, maybe it was on sale and you were caught up in the moment, and now you suddenly realize that you no longer need it. Or maybe you ended up buying the wrong version, bought two copies on accident, got another copy as a gift, found a better deal elsewhere, decided to go with an accountant or another tax preparation program, or simply found the software too complicated to use for your specific tax situation this year.
Whatever the reason, most boxed versions of TurboTax qualify for a 60-day money back guarantee even if the store that you bought it from does not accept returns on opened software purchases or have a restocking fee. But before you return anything, just keep in mind that all versions of TurboTax let you upgrade to a higher version within the software itself so if you plan on upgrading then you don’t have to go through the hassle of returning the box (just pay the pay the price difference between the two versions within the TurboTax program that you already own).
TurboTax products that qualify for a refund
In general, all boxed versions of TurboTax purchased at an authorized retailer (i.e. Amazon, Costco, Best Buy, Walmart, etc.) will qualify for Intuit’s 60-day money back guarantee. This includes TurboTax Basic, Deluxe, Premier, Home & Business, and Business versions. If you purchased your CD or download from Intuit directly (i.e. from the TurboTax Store), then you also qualify for the 60-day return policy. Just be sure to have a copy of your receipt or invoice handy as it will be required to process your return.
How to process the refund.
Because most local stores generally don’t accept returns on opened software, you’ll have to return any order made from a retailer to Intuit directly by mail. Make sure sure you include your name, mailing address, phone number, a copy of the receipt, and the software with original box, and send it to one of the two addresses below.

If you purchased a CD or download version of TurboTax directly from Intuit, then use this form to send in your return. Remember that most returns on orders made from Intuit do not require you to send in the physically software as they delete the license over the web.
Intuit processes returns between 6 to 8 weeks from the date Intuit receives your request. Once processed, you’ll receive a check in the amount of your purchase price to the mailing address that you provided in your request.
Are the online version of TurboTax refundable?
No, the online versions (web-based) are not returnable because you pay for their software and service at the time of filing your taxes. Intuit argues that because you pay for it once you’ve gone through the entire tax preparation process, with the option of not paying if you didn’t like it at any point, then there shouldn’t be a reason for you to have to return it. Even if you accidentally and unnecessarily started with a more expensive program than needed, you have the option to have a clear start over and switch to a lower version before paying for it.
