Family Tree Maker 2016 Release Date News & Rumors

family tree maker 2015 release date

Updated September 9th, 2015: It’s been a while since we posted an update about Family Tree Maker but it’s been really quiet all year and from the looks at it, and from what we’ve been reading from others in the Ancestry blog, we still have probably some time until the 2016 version is released. One important indication is that it appears that invitations to 2016 beta testers have not been sent out (FTM has had beta testers or the last several releases). And with Windows 10 causing many software companies headaches to be compatible and given the fact that they just patched the 2014 version, chances are that we will see Family Tree Maker 2016 no earlier than Spring 2016.

Updated November 14th, 2014: Well, looks like there may not be a new Family Tree Maker for 2015.  Some have said for the last few weeks that there will not be a 2015 release of FTM while others were originally predicting it would be announced sometime at the end of October.  October has long past and we haven’t even heard any news about a beta, so it looks like 2015 will be skipped just like the 2013 release was skipped as well.

Nova/Ancestry.com is expected to release Family Tree Maker no earlier than Spring, 2016.- Expected Family Tree Maker 2015 2016 Release Date

Here is a brief look into the Family Tree Maker software release history:

  • Family Tree Maker 2014 – This is the current version. It was released on September 10, 2013.
  • Family Tree Maker 2013Never released. Only updates to the 2012 version were made available throughout 2013.
  • Family Tree Maker 2012 – Announced on November 15, 2011.
  • Family Tree Maker 2011 – Released on Sep 14, 2010.
  • Family Tree Maker 2010 – Released on Aug 19, 2009.

The new features that we saw in the 2014 version included a new family view with improved navigation and TreeSync, an increased set of organization tools like sorting by birth order or location, and a new export option for fast exporting of single branches.

What do we want to see added and changed in the 2016 edition?

From both our own experiences with the 2014 versions and from those shared to us by current users, we’ve put together our wish list for the 2016 release. We hope some, if not all, of these changes find their way into Family Tree Maker in the near feature.

  • Improved mapping database – We consistently find that certain locations, especially some of the smaller towns, can’t be found (when this is the case, you’ll see a “?” listed next to the entry). Sometimes locations will be kicked back even when you enter the same one in a few times. However, often the same location is found on the map. Why is it possible to find a place in one database but not on the other?
  • Faster installation process – We’re not sure if it’s just the 2014 version that’s taking so long if it’s caused by Windows 8.1, but the installation seems to take much longer than ever before (nearly an hour for us). Then it took about 20 minutes to import my existing family tree into it the new edition. The previous versions seemed to install and load a lot faster than this latest one.
  • Cut down the subscription costs – Although the 3-month subscription to ancestry.com that’s included with the Deluxe version is great, the subscription fee that kicks in afterwards is steep at $200/year. There should be several difference subscriptions levels, especially one at a lower cost for those that are more casual genealogists. A lot of people seem to drop their plans after the free trial is up.
  • Remove the credit card requirement for the free trial – We know it’s common practice nowadays for large companies to require a credit card to activate a free trial but it’s still a shady practice in my opinion. You’ll be automatically charged for an ancestry.com subscription if you don’t cancel before your free trial is up. Remember, your free trial starts at the moment you sign up for it and the clock will start ticking regardless if you use it or not.

I have the 2012 version. I would like to see a chart that can be used for family reunions that shows just one side of an ancestral family tree (if a newer version does not have it). It could be done fairly easily by having the ancestor choice separated into two parts. Then, one could restrict the ancestors on one side to 1 or 0 and let the other side be open.

I would like to be able to delete a whole family not just a single person as is now

FTM stops working 4 or 5 times in an 8 hour session. The issue is poor programming of the Windows .NET Framework functions that are the basis for FTM. Windows error reports show that FTM violates some .NET Framework rule so it stops working.

FTM sometimes will not automatically get a relationship right. There should be a way to override the automatic choice through the relationship calculator frame, but it has not been implemented properly.
FTM always selects residence data as preferred, even when it shows USA for someone from 13th Century England. I have never seen a useful residence data, so I always deselect it. I would prefer to tell FTM to never select residence.
FTM always selects Personal Ancestry Numbers which are always useless to anyone but the person who used them 1st. I should be able to default ignore them.
FTM always selects LDS data, I should be able to default ignore
FTM always selects update date data(a LDS thing). I want to default ignore it.
FTM always selects anything that even looks like a title in a name, even after I have selected “do not use titles in the name”. Titles have their own place. I want the default to work like it should.
These are programming features that constantly irritate me as I use FTM. Other programs have features that are quite useful, but if I had used them every day for 15 years, I would probably find small things that could work better.
I would suggest to the new owner/developers of FTM to really listen to users, and fix everything that can be fixed, even if it means jettisoning Windows.NET Framework as the basis for the program. Maybe some newer way to structure a family tree program could function without crashing or stopping every 90 minutes or so. New Owner/developers might be able to remove some of the LDS blinders that defined, yet constrained the program from the very first.

One thing that new owners cannot fix is that the Ancestry.com database as it is now set up will never drill down to what the user is actually searching for. It will always search name first and foremost. Perhaps new owners could make the search function prioritize name, date, and country equally so I would not get first the information in some 19th century Pennsylvania newspaper for someone of the same last name, when I am looking for marriage information for someone in 17th century Virginia. Nor would I get first, census information for England in the 19th century, when I’m looking for someone who lived in 1450 in Ireland.

Finally I agree that the search function from FTM to Ancestry and back seems dreadfully slow. I think it takes as long to search now when my internet speed is often 14 mbps and sometimes 20 mbps as it did when my internet speed was 444 kbps. Ancestry.com has not prioritized much higher speed database search algorithms and higher speed servers. Ancestry has no interest in helping its customers search more efficiently and more speedily, when they have an interest in charging year by year.
FTM’s new owners could show that their customers time is valuable by figuring out how to search the Ancestry.com database much faster and much more accurately, and then how to compile the results faster and more accurately.

I would like to see you bring back the ability to edit photos again! Doesn’t need to be fancy, just be able to crop, lighten and darken like on the old editions.

I would like to have Family Tree Maker in Arabic language.or i will loss all my data that i buld it long time ago

  6. December 17, 2015

    Moi

Very disappointing, I’ve been using FTM for many years now and have to agree think they will be losing a lot of followers. Their new upgraded site on Ancestry is more complicated too

FTM lost good report making capability when they started to define the releases by year…
The last good report generator was included with Version 16…..

What?!? Retire FTM software? Everything web based?

What I do everything on my computer. Backups and other work done with ;Laptops or other devices.

I do upload or sync with Ancestry and church sites but main records, research, notes, and projects are computer based.

I DO NOT use the cloud nor want everything kept on the web. Most work I do is OFFLINE and when finished and checked sync when ever I fell like it.

If this occurs I will or will have to look for a another software to use.

I use Windows 7 Pro and thinking of migrating to Apple (Mac)

  9. December 9, 2015

    Woodchal

Well I guess this answers that question!

Ancestry to Retire Family Tree Maker Software

  10. December 9, 2015

    Wendy

Well now we know why we have had no news of FTM 2016, there will be no more Family Tree Maker according to a US email I received from Ancestry this morning. They are discontinuing producing software and are making it all web-based. They included a link to a blog, and there are hundreds and hundreds of messages, mostly against this move. I must say that I think they will lose a lot of business by doing this.

I am on a Windows 7 computer (not professional), but I am unable to get Windows 10.
It would be nice if the upgrade can go well with those computers with or without Windows 10.

    • March 5, 2016

      howardbragg

It is very easy to upgrade windows 7 to Windows 10. There are lots of places to get clear instructions or videos on how to do it. I found it best to download Win 10 to an 8mb USB drive and install from there. But if you ask Windows 7 updates, it will do it too, only not at a time of your choosing. I have upgraded 3 separate computers, Win 7, Win 8, Win 8.1 to it and for the most part it is better. Just search online for advice if you are hesitant

I belong to the local history group and we are sent research requests. I have used Family Tree Maker for the actual research work but have been looking at other programmes to get suitable reports for presenting the research. A plug-in for FTM called Family Book Creator has a very good way of presenting a family book but unfortunately does not add all the information only select facts. A report similar to this picking up all the facts on the database would be excellent.
There are features in some of these other programmes that would be good to have incorporated into FTM. When entering bdm, baptisms, burials, etc. it is possible to enter witnesses, wedding party, officiating minister, funeral directors. I would like to see this added to FTM.

  13. November 8, 2015

    Aileen Clarke

The reports Family Tree Maker produces are inadequate. Trying to produce a book is a nightmare. It appears that it is not capable of producing a book with a lot of people. It would be good if multiple photos could be incorporated linked to the corresponding data. I have always used Family Tree Maker but have noticed that other genealogy programmes produce much better reports.

  14. November 8, 2015

    Aileen Clarke

I think the reports Family Tree Maker produce are not adequate. I would love to be able to create a book which incorporates multiple photos of the same person linked to the corresponding fact. It would also be good if the book option was easier to use and it appears that it is only able to cope with a small amount of people. I have always used family tree maker but have noticed that other software produce much better reports.

Being able to save directly from Family Search to Ancestry would be helpful. Editing the text in personal reports and notes remains a challenge and could be greatly improved.

    John Bolz

Would like a change to export to GEDCOM allowing links to images download to my PC (census .jpgs, etc) to be included in the GEDCOM. Precludes using these images in my own genealogy website.

  17. November 1, 2015

    B Brooks

This may sound strange. But, I’m sure that my ancestrial family is not the only one that married cousins. When trying to determine exact relationships, FT 2012 only gives the closest relationship. I would like to see all links of relationships so that I can determine bloodlines.

  18. October 23, 2015

    rob

Photo/media tagging as in facebook would be very helpful with family photos.

  19. October 21, 2015

    Neil Connolly

I would like a few improvements:
    1. A Canadian version that is not just for Americans (Provinces, not states, Postal Codes, not Zip codes, a LOT more Canadian sources to choose from)

    2. A whole upgrade on the sources. We need a new structure for sources that is not just for Americans. We desperately need improvements in the efficiency of inputting source information. There are way too many key strokes, most of which are very repetitive. I cannot believe that you have not made any improvements in this area, since your current version, is so incredibly inefficient and cumbersome.

    3. More robust methods of inputting, searching, storing, accessing and tagging media. Again your system is very inefficient.

    4. Lower prices for your subscriptions. Perhaps you could offer tier prices that are lower for people who contribute and publish tree data. Or give rebates to people who have their trees accessed and downloaded. The more it is accessed, the bigger the rebate on their subscription, or give a steep discount when they renew. It is much too expensive now.

    5. More stability. I get too many crashes, and I have a very updated system, and above average computer skills.

  20. October 10, 2015

    Patrick

    * Being able to sync the master-tree with multiple devices, ie a desktop and a laptop
. Being stuck to one device is a bummer
    * Improved syncing of images.
    * Dutch language version for my older relatives 🙂
    * More export and print options
    * Beter lineage recognition (for example with different colours)
    * More ‘modern relationship’ options

  21. October 7, 2015

    Richard Watkins

Obviously now FTM 2016 must operate under Windows 10 reliably and with stability.

Add a descendant chart the same as PAF Toolbox descendant chart. It is magical for easy following generational lines and for research. There are many charts within and without FTM but no descendant chart is as good as the one from PAF Toolbox that was in the DOS era. Allow which data is to be included in the desendant chart such as christenings and baptisms and burial.

Whilst not an issue for my tree at present, with the way of the world now with same sex marriages, how is FTM going to address this issue especially when only one parent tends to be a natural parent. For adoptives in my tree, I have a tree to cover the biological ancestry and one for the adoptive ancestry.

Large print capability such as A3 and A2 and those old inch large sizes too.

When search results are shown, put the country of focus first and then other countries. I frequently have USA results ahead of my focus country even though I have edit updated the search.

I use my Ancestry tree as my main tree. I want to periodically update by synchronisation with FTM tree. However, when I synchronise now it first sends FTM data to Ancestry and then from Ancestry to FTM. I would like to be able to elect a one way synchronisation. When I do a place name check, then I want to update Ancestry from FTM.

  22. October 4, 2015

    antonyz

I would like to see a graphical interface for developing a tree(similar to Geni) where members can be added by clicking on the tree item and selecting the relationship.

  23. September 29, 2015

    CherylP

I would like to see something that allows two people, who are not married, but have a child together to be added to the program. When I add them now, in FTM 2012, it lists them as married and does not offer an alternative.

  24. September 29, 2015

    Dwight Haverkorn

I would like to see an option where I can selelect Portrait or Landscape for printing reports. Also allow me to select larger sizes of paper upon which to print. I have large format printer but FTM 2014 will not allow to use.

  25. September 7, 2015

    Jean Jamieson

I’m still using Family Tree Maker 7.0 for Windows! from 1999! Hope it will still work on Windows!)!
I purchased FTM Deluxe 2012 – was so disappointed and frustrated with it that I uninstalled it and went back to the 1999 edition. Unfortunately I was beyond the 90 day return turn by the time I got around to installing the 2012 edition.
I have 13,800 individuals on the file so I don’t want an update that has “tree-style” entries.
    Go back to simplicity.
As for the “free” access to Ancestry.com. It is a waste. If you by the program in Canada you only get access to mainly Canadian records (Ancestry.ca) which are free anyway without a subscription.

  26. September 6, 2015

    Art Kopkau

I would like to see an Index capability for reports which will tie person names in the report to the pages on which they appear.

  27. September 1, 2015

    cpneubie

I’d like to see Drag & Drop abilities and I would like to copy/paste images obtained external to FTM to the media file without having to save to C:drive first.

And I would like to see the Media Categorization improved. I have a moderately long list of categories. Instead of having to scroll to select the categories that I want (good grief — so a small display of categories at a time), I’d like to be able to type and have FTM anticipate what I want OR I’d like FTM to offer “most commonly selected” as the first options OR I’d like to be able to type the first 3 or 4 letters of the category name and let FTM offer my choices OR I’d like to be able to have abbreviations for the category names….ANYTHING that doesn’t require me to scroll that list.

Also, the left hand column on the Media screen/workplace could have more functionality. Why place the ALL, PHOTOS, STORIES in the white pane which is really not helpful as it doesn’t narrow the selection, but then above it have a drop down in the LIST BY. It is really not helpful.

If I MUST save media files to the C:drive first, then allow me to pull multiple files into FTM at the same time instead of one by one.

In the Media Workplace — allow me to cluster those files into folders. …and if I need to rename them, allow me to rename multiples at the same time. One by One? Really?

    That’s good start.

  28. August 31, 2015

    Yvonne Estrade

*Ability to sync with ancestry.com from multiple devices, i.e. desk top and lap top

*Folders on the person pages for media. They are all mixed up, i.e. certificates, photos, letters, documents, etc. Need to be able to organized on the person page!

*Delete shaky leaves for hints already saved

  29. July 31, 2015

    Susan

I would like to see fields for witnesses of baptisms and marriages and links to the people married or baptised. Many witnesses were related in some way so being able to see the connections to different family names would help to locate missing links.

The price for Ancestry is an issue. I let my subscription drop because I don’t have much time to use it and I have most of the information available for my main lines. Perhaps a limited use or limited searches/downloads subscription rather than a monthly/annual sub would be useful.

  30. July 23, 2015

    Rob

The feature I would like to see most is more export options. I often get requests about a particular person and would like to be able to export ancestors and/or descendants for that person.

I would like to be able to link to external files. I don’t want to blow out the size of my FTM database by importing all of my scanned images of documents and pictures.

Would like to see a tablet version. I export my FTM database and then import it to a competitor’s program to be able to transfer it to my iPad. I like having it on my tablet when visiting a library or research center rather than having to lug my laptop.

  31. July 19, 2015

    Dallas Smith

So why do we need to pay so much if I only have time to do research maybe once or twice a month? They offer me free stuff but I must submit a cred card first? WHY? Then it’s not a free offer, is it! Just like every other corporation, WE THE PEOPLE make them a successful and prosperous company. Yet our reward is their GREED to jack up the prices and not give anything in return. Corporate greed just can’t understand that they would have more customers AND profits IF they would drop the price and help the small guys out. Instead, prices go higher, subscriptions go down, prices go higher, then Bankruptcy! DUH, it was their own fault for milking the people who made them popular in the first place! So can someone suggest other good programs that I can switch to? If I need to, I will go back to my old notebooks and research the old-fashioned way! Besides, the stuff on Ancestry we never know if it’s true or not, so why merge it into my proven records?

    • September 12, 2015

      Mary

I agree about being VERY careful when considering merging. I did this early only and found much of the information actually incorrect and I had to do a lot of manual removals.

  32. July 17, 2015

    Richard Merry

Ancestry need to some how to start lowering their prices. The different pricing for different parts of the world is a joke. I did make a complaint about the difference between pricing between England & Australia & was told that costs are more expensive down under.
Seeing that it is all done online & we are all probably using the same servers the only difference in cost should be what we pay our own Internet Providores to access the internet.
Maybe that if people started withdrawing their tree’s which they supply Ancestry free of charge some one might start to listen

  33. July 16, 2015

    Laurie Yuill

I would like to have the feature of tagging faces of people in photos that are imported, for example, the way it’s done in Facebook

  34. July 12, 2015

    Bob Ward

I would like to see the crashes fixed especially since they interfer with the sort of names that comes when you close the program. If the program crashes then any names you have added since you started are unsorted and needed to be ‘played’ with to get them placed in the file.
I also find the program to be slower and takes a lot of memory.
If you add a parent and add information to the child before you actually add information to the parent the program crashes (quite consistently).

  35. July 2, 2015

    Charles Simoneau

I would like to see 2016 work like all the versions I have had since 1994. In all the versions ( I got them all) and up until 2014 I never had one issue. 2014 has been a disaster, a year ago the program became unusable. I finally solved the problem (it is with the software) but lost over five thousand names. Last week I bought a new computer and FTM will not load, I get some kind of error message. I went through 8 different things they suggested I do (spent two days, as I did some of them over and over) and it still will not load,. At one point they told me I needed in uninstall FTM which was funny as I was calling to tell them it would not install.

  36. July 2, 2015

    Eleanor Zuendel

When someone has married a couple of times and children by both why are you now showing all children under both sets of parents I had mine all separated and now they list them all together under both sets of parents I tried to delete them from one set but can’t

    • July 15, 2015

      Kay Ransey

Not sure if you have resolved this but it is easy to split families.
Where the marriage details show below the parents names there is an icon at the end of that line. It allows you to show blended families or not
Tried to do a copy of page for you but did not work
      Hope it helps anyway

  37. June 29, 2015

    Dan L. Jonson

For users that work with large files it would be helpful if FTM could add a simple function in which to link to an external picture file with a large number of photos making it easier to add a photo/picture to each individual person in a tree.

  38. June 24, 2015

    Charles Voelker

I have just finished the most frustrating experience moving FTM to a new computer!!! Many of the files I wanted to move had the same file designation as the ones I did not want to move. All were different. It took days of search, move, hide and whatever necessary to find the correct ones I wanted. I worked daily for more than a week and finally prevailed and set up files I wanted. But even then, much editing had to be carried out to get the mess cleaned up. I still am not 100% certain I have it all squared away. There are 380 names in my file and I think they survived after all of my work. Now I find that a “Revised” version 2015 is a fraud. Really must be very cautions with FTM since there are years of work involved just gathering family data.

  39. June 23, 2015

    Michael Lowe

One reason I have always been frustrated with this software is that there is NO good way of exporting a family line out of the combined database, at least that myself and other family members have located this option. It would be nice to select a person and be able to export all relatives from that person forward to the current entries.

e.g. If my grandparents names were Joe and Bee Smith, it would be good to select them and have a choice to include one side or both sides from their birth to the present so you can separate the families and share only what family line you want to. If this option is available, it has not shown itself or is too difficult to accomplish as a number of us would like to be able to do this easily and none of us have found a good way to accomplish this.

Lastly the price schedule has made it impossible for those of use on fixed incomes to subscribe beyond the short time allowed when you purchase the deluxe version and just have to drop the world subscriptions. I think it would pay for Ancestory.com to come up with a better fee schedule and in the end, your might realize more income from a lot more users that would more than make up for the cuts.

Color coding individuals in a line. Roots Magic and Legacy Family Tree both have this feature. It helps to Identify what line a person belongs to.

    Brad Tharp

Compacting my large file (12 gig) results in an error message. When I reopen the file, I get a message that it was improperly shut down and I may need to compact. I usually just close out are reopen, and things work fine. Perhaps the 2016 version can bebetter tuned for very large files?

    Deb Douglas

I am a challenged senior with a computer to begin with and to work in FTM is adding to MY challenge. Perhaps I do not understand well enough to do the things I would like to do. Having said that:
    I. I would like to delete duplicate information in the reports.
    2. More color use
    3. More tutorials with the computer challenged in mind.
    4. Special prices for fixed income Seniors

I would like to see bulk sourcing. I would like to be able to select multiple individuals at a time and cite a source for those individuals. Right now I do it in an odd way, by exporting to a gedcom, using a downloaded source program and attaching a source to it, then reimporting into FTM.

  44. June 9, 2015

The comments overall contain a lot of very good suggestions for upgrades to the essential purposes of the program. I hope that the programmers are taking a look at the list of suggestions contained in these comments.

I would like to see an index feature with the narrative report on the next version of FTM. I currently use Roots Magic for printing my narratives because it gives me an index. I would like to be able to do it all in FTM because FTM prints a much better narrative.

Will Family Tree maker 14 & 16 work with Windows 10???? I just signed up for Windows 10 and am worried it won’t work and I will lose information.

In regard to Family tree maker – future releases – I would like the following:
    1. To be able to enter information in coloured text e.g. valid information in one colour, information to be validated in another colour, etc
    2. To be able to download the releases from a website, instead of via a CD. Many of the newer laptops/netbooks, etc also Tablets, come without a CD slot.
    3. To be able to work properly with Windows 8.1

I would like the new release to include the ability to include videos saved under media. I know it’s possible when FTM is being used on the “home” computer but does not work via the “sync”.
If there is a way I would be grateful if someone could share this with me. Thanks

I have an earlier post that outlines several desires for features, however I have one overriding ‘want’ – improved programming of FTM.

During the past week as I have spent several hours adding facts (along with sources that include web addresses and media downloaded from Ancestry) I’ve been hit by crashes when I past a fact to more than one family member. Using Task Manager on Windows, I’ve begun recording FTM’s use of RAM. I have found that when I start FTM 2014, the software uses about 150 MB. After a couple hours of working, that RAM use by FTM 2014 has increased from between 900 MB and 1,500 MB. It appears that as FTM uses memory for an action, the software is not releasing that memory and will eventually crash.

So, my major number one desire for the next version of FTM would be a vastly improved (the programming) software.

hi like FTM would like to be able to right click on a person in tree view and change colour options ie leave current green for completed research and change to another colour if you are working on that person or if still researching that person/I would also like to show multiple spouses in tree view ie if 3 spouses show them in date order

I would like to be able to color code the trees. ie: different color for wife, different color for tree being currently worked on, Royalty, etc.

I would like to see large format (11×17-in, 13×19-in.) printer capability added to the list of supported printers for directly printing charts, etc. Currently, the only way to print single-sheet charts larger than 8.5×11-in. is to export a pdf and then print the file on a larger printer. Many tree charts would print quite satisfactorily for display on the large format printer sizes listed above. It is quite surprising that this capability is not currently offered in FTM 2014. HP, Brother, and others manufacture these large format printers for home use. Thanks.

I would like to be able to access records by State. It’s easier working on a state level sometimes. That way you can access different branches of the family that live in the same state rather than the same branch that may live in numerous states. For instance when I pulling death certificates, marriages, etc for the state of Washingon, I’ll have all the people who resided in that state separated from the rest of the thousands of surnames in my tree that live in other states.

    • April 10, 2015

      Denise

Working by state, even a single type of record within a state, is already possible in Ancestry. Instead of using the ‘leaf’ icon or doing a general search of Ancestry through all records, from Ancestry. com do the following:
      1. Click the Search tab and scroll down to the Explore by Location area.
      2. From the map displayed, click the state in which you want to search, for example Washington.

The browser window then shows the ‘Search ▷USA▷Washington’ display. That display includes three tabs across the top, Collections, History, and Resources. The Collections tab identifies all the databases (of records) available specifically for that state, including the time period for those records. Just click one of those databases and use the standard search form of that database to search for records. For example, if I am searching for one surname in the marriage records, I will enter just that surname and click the Search button. Then I will review each of the marriage records found for that surname.

I would like to be able to return to the previous page or task using the “back button” on the mouse. Also I would like to be able to prepare and print a report on a single place name. Right now there is a place name report that does all places together in a single report. Printing all individuals associated with a single place would be most helpful when doing field research.

Not sure I fully follow your comments. Do you mean that you have FTM 2014 installed, yet have been unable to install an update to that software? If so, try starting the FTM 2014 install again, but select the Repair function. After the repair runs, then try installing the update.

  61. March 20, 2015

The entire Publish function of Family Tree Maker is in desperate need of an overhaul. Trees and descendant charts cannot seem to account for cousin marriages without duplicating the list of their descendants. The only workaround seems to be to delete the duplicate descendants from the tree or chart, but this necessitates manual placement of each descendant or descendant box on the chart.

In addition, the graphical interface used for chart production is quite primitive and limited in functionality. When descendant boxes are manually placed, they do not snap to a grid, making it very difficult to align them. Each time a minor change to one descendant box is made, the entire chart returns to its original state, resulting in having to manually position each descendant box in the chart all over again, a very tedious and time-consuming process.

To work with Win 8.1 and subsequent. Get rid of the high fees. This could be done by having a multiple tier system. Those of us who have no research to do this side of the pond don’t want or need the vast data base from North America. The ability to park in the cloud without losing data. Redress the fiasco of earlier versions of tree maker being phased out. How many more times do they want us to pay?.

    • March 24, 2015

      Martyn Woolf

It seems that your easiest answer would be to join Ancestry.co.uk. This gives me the whole of Europe and as I have almost no relatives in USA causes me no u nnecessary expense.
      I hope this helps.

I would like a task tab for each individual person, so that I can make a list of what I need to research for that person. I think that the notes sections are more about what you know, not what you want to know and can get a bit confusing if you mix the two up.

    • March 21, 2015

      Denise

FTM 2014 does have a Tasks tab for each person. Select the People icon > Person tab. At the bottom are four tabs (Notes, Media, Web Links, and Tasks). You can add all the Person tasks you want here, with those tasks displaying in the Plan icon > Tasks display area.

I did that by adding the link in the appropriate section by facts, notes, pictures, etc. If you have a large monitor, you can have find a grave open, and just copy & paste the web address.

I’d like to see the ability to choose an alternate, more simplified user interface, say similar to the FTM version 16 – the auto-sensing on install that has been advertised doesn’t appear to work to me – my wife continues to use FTM v16 since she hates the new style of interface I use in FTM 2012.
I continue to rely on FTM 2012 due to all the comments I see about issues with 2014, though I am playing with it.
The ability to input, report and share DNA Analysis info would be helpful.

The credit card rip off saw me stuck in a bind between Ancestry and where I had been billed to UK, when I am living in Australia. I had cancelled my one month sub after purchasing FTM, and thought everything would be fine. I realised a year later that Ancestry had been taking money from my card account for a full subscription of $250. I wrote, spoke, pleaded with them about the mistake on their part. They even agreed I had not used Ancestry after the month but would not refund my money. Is My Heritage any better? Maybe worth a try for a subscription. Disgusted with Ancestry, tricked me in my view…

Add a DNA page to our FTM software. So when we do a “sync” we have a offline copy of our DNA information and matches we yellow stared. Also give us a way to log our DNA results notes.

More online information to veiw. There should be more information than our matches and percentages! Added information available dealing with our test so we can compair with other DNA test to others out there.

  75. December 16, 2014

I have a short list of hopes for FTM 2016 as follows:

    1. GEDCOM exports actually sort (by birth date) children in families. Despite the new sorting feature in FTM 2014 (Tools > Sort all children by birth), a GEDCOM export from FTM 2014 does not sort children by birth date.

    2. A re-sort button for the index of people list on the Person > Tree tab. When I do a lot of work during a day, I find that list not fully sorted, with unsorted individuals at the top.

    3. The database checks (all eight – Records, Facts, People, Families, Children, Sources, and Notes) from FTM 2012 included in FTM 2016. Currently, FTM 2014 only checks Facts links for database errors and that check was only added to FTM 2014 after the software was first released.

    4. Replace the current To Do (or Tasks) list with its limited ‘post-It note’ capabilities with a real research tool. Even a list of sources as identified in a recent Ancestry YouTube video (Genealogy Sources Checklist) would be better than what is currently available on the Tasks tab.

I’d like to see the ability to sync a tree to two laptops/desktops in my household. Right now we can all only use one desktop computer to sync to our tree on Ancestry, and then the laptop is out of sync when we travel and have to load a Gedcom to sync up.

I would like them to add a timeline function that gives me decade blocks to show family dates, locations in that decade. They could also display it with maps.
Another great add would be a function that shows family groups that move together and/or a place indicator that gives me name, length of stay, significant events. Maybe a chart or color indication that shows the largest population blocks.
Another good item I could use is a list by person of what significant facts are missing (I’ve added quite a few in near and distant cousin trees).
Maybe if the company doesn’t want to add the above functions just set up a way to load it to Excel so I can sort it myself.

I would like a return to the earlier FTM version of map finding by place selection for example; selecting the place of BM or D on the people page, automatically finds that place on the places page; without having to type it in again.

Most of all, I would like FTM to create a more efficient process for entering sources and source ratings. There are way too many key strokes, and too much inefficient navigation involved in creating a new source and rating it with standardized ratings. I can’t believe they have not improved this by now. It is terrible.

Also I would like to see a more robust list of Source Groups and Source Templates. Not everyone wants to use American sources. For example, what are we to use if we want to enter a Canadian or UK census source or a source from another country? FTM is way too US centric.

Fix file merge. Tons of bugs in it.

    1. Selecting Alternate facts as preferred does not always show up after the merge.
    2. Poor job with recognizing matching people, especially same-sex couples.

I would like the hourglass report to be of a focus couple rather than an individual. Afterall, people have 2 parents. So, if I chose my parents as the focus couple, the report would show ancestors of both my mother and father and their descendants as well.

Just sooooooooooooooooo slow even on a reasonably spec’d machine – FTM 2015 needs a major revamp. Also, forget large databases. If Personal Ancestral File can do it, so should FTM even allowing for synching.

I had a membership to Family Tree Maker on my old HP (Windows Vista). Now I have an Apple MacBook………how do I transfer the data or do I need to buy the whole thing and re-enter the info? Soooooo frustrating!
I also think there should be a way to get reduced rates for renewal on all of these ancestry sites. The more info you add, the more you should be rewarded. This is especially true of sites like, Find A Grave/Billion Graves. I have done lots of cemetery work which involves driving/time/gas etc. Sure would be nice to be rewarded with a price break for the “sister” sites when it’s us the subscribers doing a lot of the legwork.

  90. September 19, 2014

    Barbara Gregory

I’d like to see a way to reduce the subscription rate. If I am doing leg work for Ancestry or any of it’s sister sites ex: find a grave, and I add info there, (to benefit others), then I should be rewarded with a price break on renewal. That holds true for all info entered. The subscribers are doing lots of the work and then we “get” to be fleeced when renewal comes around. Doesn’t quite seem fair…….

      Hi Timothy,

Thanks for sharing – Great tip! Hope that’s not the case but it’s getting a bit late for the beta (we haven’t seen any news on it yet) so it’s possible that 2015 will be another “free update” year to those running the 2014 version.

In the FACT function, allow it to take URLs that will function in pdf reports and in the main FTM programme. I’ve made a FACT which I call “Biographical Internet Link” and I use it in Individual Facts, but I can’t make the description of said fact work as an internet link. Mainly I use it for biographies that I know will never disappear, mostly links to the persons Wikipedia page. I won’t use it to link to home made pages, where such home made web pages disappear after awhile. I’d like to place my “Biographical Internet Link” FACT within the Personal Information heading, but the programme won’t allow it, only allowing for created FACT to be within Individual Facts or Shared Facts. Having more internet link-ability on the Individual and Shared Fats Page would be great.

    Basically, 2014 was quite crap.
For instance, with larger trees (mine is 21k+) I sometimes have to sort by firstname and then lastname again to get a proper sort on last name. Since 2012 and 2011 never gave me such issues, it would be a good start to fix.

Furthermore, it would be nice to add coat of arms to one member of the family and have it pushed forward to it’s decendants.

It would also be nice to have a feature which supports the creation of websites. i now have to buy 3rd party tools to get gedcom files converted to HTML.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t come with any fancy features to alter lay-out etc.

I would like to see a Dutch language version, which wouldn’t be too difficult, as there is already a German, Danish and Spanish one. Also make an option to choose offline or online at the starting of the program. In the 2014 version ones goed automatically online. Also more type of reports and better integration with Word would be appreciated.

I would like to get rid of the problem where at times I cannot copy and paste from one person to another in the notes section. I have version 2012 but will be upgrading to 2015. I will bring up say his birth details and not what I have copied. I have never had this problem with previous versions. Also I would like to see a report that can list all the facts in columns of each person. i.e. name, birth death marriage bapt source etc. and also be able to sort on each column as I used to do on version 6. This was a great report to have so that you could see what details were missing from each of your people.

I would like to work better with large databases. Family tree maker worked fine with 100,000 people, but now it bogged down again. Especially since I started supporting documents to the people in my database. IE- Birth Certificates, death certificates and marriage licenses. It is very frustrating.. I went back to Brothers Keeper because it can handle large databases and the media that goes with it. Splitting my database is not an option for me at all. That would defeat the purpose in seeing relationships

In “Open an existing tree:” show the latest versions of the tree files. Often the date of the file shows no relation to the last time that tree was updated.

Get the “Red Cross” on the top right hand corner to work like standard Windows protocol. Clicking the cross sometimes closes the tree; sometimes the tree & program. Pot luck!

Add a feature in Fact Properties: under Fact Options allow Date/Description. One reason: it would save room in the “Customize View” area.

Correct the feature that remembers the “Description” contents whichever Option is selected. (Currently, when Fact Option “Description Only” is selected in “Customize View” the same description has to be completely retyped for every person that qualifies, e.g. for my own purposes I have created a Fact “WW1 Service” set as “Description Only”. When many persons share the same description, under FTM rules, I would expect “Description” prompts as I type the same “Description”

Fix the error that closes the program, randomly, when clicking on random Facts in the “Customize View”.

Nearly a year ago I found a fault with the program on the statistical side.
I reported it and was told yes it was a fault and had been sent to “development” .
No Action still a fault. I reported the original fault date and time and was told it wa still being looked into. I even sent my ged file so that it could be checked. Still no action
Why bother would it not have been nice to tell me it was unimportant to fix or that it had been sorted rather than nothing
    Still that Ancestry

I would like the ability to view different parts of the database at the same time. An example if I have John Doe in the family view, I would like to open the family view for Peter Doe so I could easily transfer information between the family views for the two people.

Also if I have a genealogy report open for John Doe it would be nice to be able to open the family view for his sister, so I could see them both at the same time.

I always ignore the map location facility because I add the house name and/or number, street name and parish. Here in the UK many older properties still exist that were built in the 16th century and earlier! My descendants want to know more than the place town or village. I have had friends from Alberta Canada come to visit such towns and villages. They were staggered when the houses their forebears were born in still exist and actually were invited in to look around. Their immediate response was that full address details will be added to their FTM files despite the proverbial question mark. My house here in England was built in 1763 by way of example, complete with wattle and daub!

First I’d like it to work with Windows 8.1. Next I’d like the ability to create a new tree from an existing one. An improved export a branch. Third I’d like to be able to resolve and eliminate duplicate media files. Forth I’d like a family summation report for the entire tree. This would list the parents and children for each family and all people of a selected last name.
