Updated September 15th, 2014: We’ve just received a tip that Power Director 13 is likely to be released in the coming days. More discussion posted here on Cyberlink’s forums.
Updated August 4th, 2014: It’s time again to start watching the news and rumors from Cyberlink around the upcoming release of Power Director 13 (Deluxe, Ultra, and Ultimate versions) and well as Director Suite 3. This time around we don’t expect any major changes in the release date cycle – Be on the lookout for version 13 to be announced by Cyberlink sometime in mid-September 2014.
Looking at the release date cycles, a new version is released by Cyberlink annually in every fourth quarter of the year.
- PowerDirector 12 – This is the current version (released on September 6, 2013).
- PowerDirector 11 – It was released on September 19, 2012.
- PowerDirector 10 – Announced on October 11, 2011.
- PowerDirector 9 – Released on November 18, 2010.
- PowerDirector 8 – Released on August 3, 2009.
- PowerDirector 7 – Released on May 7, 2008.
- PowerDirector 6 – Released on March 14, 2007.
What changes are we expecting to see in the new version of PowerDirector 13?
Version 12 boasts the latest 64-bit video editing (which is now up to 40% faster in H.264 encoding), new MultiCam Editing support and Theme Designer for creating 3D animated videos. We also saw improvements to the third generation TrueVelocity rendering engine with multi-GPGPU acceleration, 4K resolution support, and AVCHD 2.0 3D progressive certification. With PowerDirector 13, we’re hoping to see better reliability on Windows 8. Many customers have reported that PowerDirector 12 crashing and freezes up on them even with short video clips (it seems like it may be caused by an interference with certain anti-virus programs like AVG). We also hope to see better dual monitor support as it doesn’t play all tracks in “MOVIE” mode on both.
What should I do if I just bought PowerDirector 12 right before version 13 was released?
Sometimes it’s just hard to pinpoint when the next version will be released, but if you end up buying PowerDirector 12 right before PowerDirector 13 is released, then don’t worry. Cyberlink offers a 30-day money back guarantee on all of their software sold through the Cyberlink Store. So even though they don’t have an official grace period or free upgrade policy on the books, you’re protected by their return policy if the new version comes out within 30 days of the newer one. If you fall into this category of customers, then be sure to contact their customer support as soon as possible for the free upgrade or to start the return process.

Why does this keep kicking me out and locking up? I have sooo much trouble with this I am ready to go to another program. Any suggestions? It even locks up and boots me out when I’m trying to save!! I spend more time re-doing my video!! Very frustrating!!
Ron
I would like to see power tools that you can for example trim, after you have used them.
Furthermore I would like to see photo and video enhancements like Picasa does with photo’s. Simple and quick with great results.
Krista
I’ve been trying to load animated GIFs but they don’t work in PD12.
Would need that in the next version.

– For 3D , I would love to have a real correction module (example: Magix video or Vegas).
– Having the introduction of 3D movie.
– Fully review the principle of 3D menus (example menus Pinnacle Studio).
– 3D editing two files from D and G (possible with multicamera module).
Mike
I just wish they would improve on what they already have; ie make the tools better in cleaning up the video and sound. Specifically, when enhancing a lower resolution video, not just adding color, etc., but to use some logarhithms etc. to really improve the definition of the video. I know that is really hard to do, because you can’t magically add more data than what is already there, but I think you really can if you have the right tools.
MICHAEL
I wish this time Cyberlink 13 can support alpha channels. We really need a grearter change than editing.
Carlos
I’ve never had any issues with PD9,10,11 or 12.
Waiting on PowerDirector Pro and or Director Suite Pro
Peter Pitman
Would like PD 13 to be able to unlock gpu on amd dual graphics otherwise great – make 12 gig videos in hd 1080p on laptop ok.
Patrick Ochs
Would like the ability so when you multi cam edit you can just bring all the clips full length into power director if needed to do more editing. Would really help when doing weddings and events like that.

I have PowerDirector 12 Ultra and works great on Windows 8. I do have 8 gigs of RAM and a core i5 processor). I would like to see Color Director integrated into PowerDirector. The basic color fixes/enhances aren’t enough. Also it is very hard to do more advanced editing (video masking, green screen, etc.).
Patrick Ochs
would like to see color director make every thing around a color mask transparent so we can layer for ground and background in a video.
Patrick Ochs
I have power director 12 and it works fine. The problem most people have is resources in the operating system itself. Windows 8 has so many things running in the background it will cause a program like power director to freeze up. When I give power director a command even if it looks like it is doing ok if I know it is a large resource request I wait a few seconds before proceeding. The software starts running up front right at first but some tings in the background takes a few seconds to catch up. It dose not mater if you have 3 quads or 1 guad.processor, 4 gigs of ram or 24. having more processing just means that you can do larger commands that have more demanding on the resources. Not more of them. Again tune windows 8 down to more like 7 and you will see a great improvement.
can not wait for power director 13 to see what they have.

From my point of view (besides all just mentioned below)
1. Audio Ducking is a must
2. better crossfade transitions (without freezing)
Milos
I would like to see better shadow function in video titler, it has range 1-100 and it is impossible finely set up right shadow for title(like other titlers), value 1 is little and value 2 is sometimes too much, value over 10 no one would use for normal titles.
Mike
I would like it if Cyberlink Powerdirector 13 would export 4K as well as import it. If I have a 4K camcorder and a 4K tv, why wouldn’t I want to produce a 4K video to showcase on my equipment, in 4K? Powerdirector 13 should be able to handle the editing, producing, and the burning of a 4K project within it program.
Premhanse
Wouid like to see more transitions and ability to rolling texts.
RRRoger
I would like to see better 4k support
for my GH4
sues
Alpha channels really need that support! So limited when creating without that support. Please please please sort this
Raimundo
I’d like to see a decent Menu Creation facility. The current menu designer in PD12 is rubbish, no flexibility, limited options. I can’t believe that such a good program has such a crappy menu design function.
Carlos
I would like to see HEVC H265 support.
Jan
– Where are the VU meters? PD13 needs VU-meters!
– jkl key facility and I mean not only play and 1 frame forward or backward.
– tired of switching from clip to movie mode all the time. They should change it.
jesusmuzik
You can change this in settings in PD12. You can set it to when you play, it automatically changes to movie mode.
Wayne
Hoping for a LIVE capture that can be film while the background (video) is playing..
Ken
If PowerDirector 13 Ultimate cannot capture from Sony’s FDR-AX100 4K camcorder (XAVCS, 4K format), and be able to fully process that 4K video format, I will not buy PowerDirector 13 Ultimate. Some 12 Version reviews (PC-Mag, I believe) say that Corel VideoStudio X7 Pro has more features than PD12, and is a better, less expensive buy. I hope Cyberlink can catch up, featurewise, within the short time they would typically introduce PD 13 Ultimate (Sept. 2014), in order for me to consider the purchase.
Marc
A program that didn’t crash every time you try to produce a 1920 x 1080 output, would be a great improvement !
Nvidia GTX 460, latest driver
WIN 8.1
PD 12, latest version
gilles
I would like to see support all plugins prodad and nuewblue

Alpha channels
A way to select multiple clips and mute them all at once (or can you already do this, showmen please)
More finesse when trimming, ala premier elements or pro slowing the jogging the clip slowly to get an exact cut.
Cheaper upgrade price for those with v12!
Brad Goodman
1. Support for Alpha channels on video
2. Better Multicam support, including:
a. More “reliable” functions to line up *multiple fragments* of video clips by audio
b. Ability to switch between audio tracks as we can with video
c. Ability to do transition affects (like fades) when switching between cameras
3. “Cinematic Trailer” wizard – like you can do with iMovie
4. More/better audio/music clips
Brian
1. Better clip trimming facilities.
2. Reintroduce the “combine” function for clips previouslu separated. This wa removed several version ago. Why?
3. Producing at 50P
Sues
Support for Alpha channels – Lots of opportunities to add effects missed! Cyberlink please, please, please look at this!
Arthur E Garcia
I would like to be able to crop 3:2 photos while in the Library to 16:9
I would prefer to have the music track immediately below the timeline for easier synchronization and a wider band for easier volume control.
Is it possible to add color boards in T templates aside from what is already there.
Under subtitle is it possible to control the size and color of the letters?
An improved enhancement and sharpening.
Under Create disc is it possible to burn a project on 25p fps or avchd 2.0 to Blu ray disc?
Rod
I would like to be able to put captions anywhere on the video or photo like you can in Roxio.
petr
Well, improved clip organizer like in older versions of Adobe Premiere. To be able to organize clips into nested groups (chapters) according to contents. Improved keyframe editing, Group operations like remove audio part from all selected clips. Copying setting of colour enhancement from one clip to another. Possibility to increase or decrease whole clip audio by mouse dragging volume line.
Lee
Alpha channel is an absolute must. If not, I am going to have to move to another platform. Too many missed opportunities without it.
Marc
I’d really like it if the next version included a stereoscopic multiplexer, to take LEFT and RIGHT video files (for 3D) and splice them together into an SBS format. I’d originally purchased PowerDirector expecting it had this function, as it promised “end to end 3D editing” and was quite disappointed. as it is, I have to convert my files to another format to run them through an external 3D multiplexer, which means extra steps and loss of quality. Sony Movie Studio has had this function since a few versions, but I’d prefer not to switch, if I don’t have to, as I otherwise have no problems with PowerDirector.
Andrew McMillan
I’d love to see support for alpha channels (for both video and image), motion tracking, and an improved keyframe and path editor interface.
stuart
would love to see higher bit rates and more control over quality 2 pass encode things like that better menus even auto made menus with still the freedom to change everything in the menu
Rob
I would like to see better reliability on Windows 8 indeed.
Since I upgraded to W8 PD10 slows down terribly. I want to upgrade to PD12 but only if it is as fast as it used to be on W7.
Also I would like to see some better trimming facilities.
